Vodafone Idea to Launch AI-Driven Protection Feature
Vodafone Idea (Vi) is gearing up to introduce a new AI-powered spam protection feature aimed at shielding its customers from online fraud. Dubbed Smart Link Protection, the upcoming solution is designed to detect and block suspicious or fraudulent links in real time, strengthening the operator’s network security measures and providing a safer digital experience for millions of users.
What is Vi’s Smart Link Protection?
According to a report by TelecomTalk, the Smart Link Protection feature will operate at the network level, meaning users will not need to install any software or take additional steps on their smartphones. Instead, Vi’s network itself will act as the first line of defence against malicious links. Once live, the feature will automatically analyze and filter harmful URLs, preventing them from reaching a user’s device.
Unlike conventional security solutions that alert users only after a threat reaches their phone, Smart Link Protection is designed to stop attacks before they even arrive. This proactive approach significantly reduces the chances of phishing, fraud, and identity theft attempts.
Tackling the Rising Threat of Phishing
Phishing scams have become increasingly sophisticated in recent years, with cybercriminals often disguising fraudulent messages as authentic alerts from banks, government agencies, or service providers. Unsuspecting users are tricked into clicking malicious links and revealing sensitive information such as passwords, banking credentials, or OTPs.
- By integrating AI and machine learning (ML) algorithms, Vi’s Smart Link Protection will continuously monitor traffic patterns, study millions of spam samples, and detect fraudulent behaviour in real time.
- This not only protects customers from financial scams but also enhances overall trust in the operator’s network.
This upcoming feature builds upon Vi’s AI/ML-based spam SMS detection system, which was launched in 2024. That system already analyses suspicious messages, flags fraudulent URLs, and filters out unsolicited promotions and identity theft attempts as they arrive.

Vi has also rolled out other tools to tackle spam, including:
- An option to file spam complaints via the Vi mobile app.
- Unsolicited commercial communication (UCC) detection.
- Bulk call pattern identification to prevent mass spamming.
The telecom industry is increasingly focusing on network-level spam protection. Airtel, for instance, launched a similar AI-driven spam detection feature in 2024 to safeguard its customers. With Vi’s Smart Link Protection, the competition among telecom operators to deliver secure, scam-free mobile experiences is set to intensify even further in the coming days.
With phishing and online scams on the rise, Vi’s Smart Link Protection could be a game-changer for customer safety. By blocking fraudulent links at the source, Vi aims to provide users with a secure and seamless digital journey. The feature is expected to roll out in the coming days, giving Vi subscribers a much-needed safety net against the plausible risks associated with cyber threats.
